What Is a Brand Identity And How To Build One

It’s always the little details that matter, and it’s no different when it comes to building your brand identity. As we stroll along the streets today, we see big, bold, sometimes colorful, and other times monotonous but chic brand logos on the side of buildings or on shop banners. These are their brand identities.

What is a Brand Identity?

A brand identity refers to the elements that make up what said brand would look like in a typical consumer’s head. From the logo, to the colors and even design of your brand are what sets you apart from your competitors, and what makes your business unique.

For example, a cup of coffee is just like any other regular cup of coffee until you add a green straw, and suddenly you’re now holding a $6 latte macchiato from Starbucks. This is no strange phenomenon. It’s the decades of branding that has led us to associate any green straws with Starbucks, that’s the power of a strong brand identity.

How to Develop a Strong Brand Identity?


1. Who are you?

It’s important to first know what your business stands for, and what you wish to be seen as? If you struggle at this stage, think about how you can align them to your business’ mission, values and beliefs that drive your company. Alternatively, you should also imagine your business as a person, then think about what kind of personality it should have?

 Once you’ve got that down, you can start cracking your brains for the design.

2. Design

Like how a bright, bolded yellow ‘M’ seamlessly brings McDonald’s to the top of our minds, you should also think of an element of your own. The design stage comprises more than just your logo, but also the choice of font, colour palette and shape.

These elements work hand in hand in building up your website, creative assets for content on your social media pages, and even the business cards you hand out to peers at networking events.

3. Consistency

It’s no doubt that if we wish to get our brand ingrained into our consumer’s heads, we have to keep these elements consistent across all platforms and media.

Do this right and you’re slowly but surely going to build up your brand identity, so that one day, your customers can easily identify you from just a glance at your corporate colours or unique shape.
